Historic drivers of onshore wind power siting and inevitable future trade-offs

چکیده
Abstract The required acceleration of onshore wind deployment requires the consideration both economic and social criteria. With a spatially explicit analysis validated European turbine stock, we show that historical siting focused on cost-effectiveness turbines minimization local disamenities, resulting in substantial regional inequalities. A multi-criteria allocation approach demonstrates 180 different scenarios strong trade-offs have to be made future expansion by 2050. sites additional can associated with up 43% lower costs average, 42% higher equality, or 93% less affected population than at existing locations. Depending capacity generation target, repowering decisions spatial scale for siting, mean increase least 18% if is minimized — even more so equality maximized. Meaningful regulations compensate regions neglecting one criteria are urgently needed.

Mind the gap: treefalls as drivers of parental trade‐offs
Tree-fall gaps are small-scale disturbances whose formation, colonization, and role in forest dynamics are well documented, but whose effects on animal ecology are still greatly overlooked, except for studies comparing species richness of gaps 6+ months old to that in the closed canopy. Other factors associated with the invasion of fresh tree-fall gaps such as animal breeding adaptations have b...
متن کاملPower/Performance Trade-offs for Direct Networks
High performance portable and space-borne systems continue to demand increasing computation speeds while concurrently attempting to satisfy size, weight, and power constraints. As multiprocessor systems become necessary to satisfy the computational requirements, interconnection network design will become subject to similar constraints. This paper focuses on the design of multiprocessor intercon...
متن کاملOptimal Siting and Sizing of Wind Farms
In this paper, we propose a novel technique to determine the optimal placement of wind farms, thereby taking into account wind characteristics and electrical grid constraints. We model the long-term variability of wind speed using a Weibull distribution according to wind direction intervals, and formulate the metrics that capture wind speed characteristics at a specific location, namely the ari...
متن کاملPower and delay trade-offs in fading channels
Energy is a constrained resource in mobile wireless networks. In such networks, communication takes place over fading channels. By varying the transmission rate and power based on the current fading level, a user in a wireless network can more efficiently utilize the available energy. For a given average transmission rate, information theoretic arguments provide the optimal power allocation. Ho...
